5 “Endless Summer” Vacations for Labor Day Weekend and Beyond
5. San Juan Island, Washington
Although it’s just three hours by car and ferry from Seattle, San Juan island feels much further away, and decades behind the modern fray. Spend the first half of the day shopping, spa-ing and socializing in lively Friday Harbor, and an hour later you’re sipping chardonnay among the vines at peaceful San Juan Vineyards. Loll on the beach all day if it suits you, or sample one of the incredibly scenic hikes in Lime Kiln Point State Park, considered one of the best places in the world to see orcas from shore. For lunch, take a picnic to the Sculpture Garden, a 19-acre preserve showcasing zany modernist creations of stone and steel. Newly opened. Zip San Juan has 8 different ziplines that sail through a canopy of red cedar and across a dramatic landscape of lakes and wetlands. An easygoing all-in-one vacation retreat is the specialty of long-established resorts like Roche Harbor Resort and Friday Harbor House, which offer everything from golf to whale watching to sailing. A more luxe experience is offered by Poets Cove Resort and Spa, while if “glamping” (glamorous camping) is more your style, try it out at Lakedale with its luxurious fully furnished canvas cabins. Some of the best eats on the island are at Duck Soup, where the menu is based on what’s growing in the garden.

‘Glamping’ brings creature comforts to outdoors
Simpler outdoor digs are available at Lakedale at Three Lakes on Washington State’s San Juan Island. “Canvas cabins” with pillow-top mattresses and cordless lanterns (but no electricity or private baths) start at about $160 a night with breakfast.

San Juan Islands: Slow and serene are watchwords here, on the rugged islands off the coast of Washington State.
At Lakedale, you can go “glamping” in luxurious fully furnished canvas cabins or stay warm in the lakeside log lodge, where a hearty breakfast is served on the deck overlooking glassy green water.

Glamping: the cure for the common camping trip
“This year, Lakedale in Washington state’s San Juan Islands opened the flaps on its Canvas Cottage, which features a pillow-top king bed, electricity and a private bathroom. Rates start at $279 per night, but you can enhance your stay further by ordering ‘grab and go’ meals from the resort’s sister property, The Bluff restaurant. For $39 per person, you can choose a protein (for example, marinated steak with bourbon-shallot butter or brined bone-in pork chop), plus a starch and a vegetable.”

Lodge Podge- Lakedale
Born as an off-the-radar campground in the 1970s, San Juan Island’s Lakedale blossomed into a choose-your-poison destination where everybody is exactly as close to nature as they can handle. In the centerpiece wooden lodge, nature is very much kept at bay. Campfires? Leave them for the tent jockeys across the lake, or even the in-betweeners engaging in the canvas-cabin “glamorous camping” (yes, you can hate on the non-word glamping); in the 10 posh rooms of the main building, there are private slate fireplaces. Take that, nature. The ferry ride to the San Juan Island is no brisk commuter route. This is an hour- plus scenic journey to the seaside town of Friday Harbor, the kind of white-trimmed burg where you can make a meal of ice cream and saltwater taffy. Five miles farther inland Lakedale, where hundreds can fill its 90 campsites, 15 canvas tents, six cabins, and single 1978 Airstream trailer. Lodge guests get all the luxury perks- bathrobes and wet bars, even champagne- without the usual hotel sterility; no keycard locks or drone fluorescent hallway lights. During the day there are all the thrills of summer camp except bug juice: paddle boating, fishing, even tie-dye. An on-site general store, in true Washington style, devotes a fifth on its shelf space to Northwest wines. If you’d rather order off a menu than make a meal of merlot and Cup Noodles, island favorite Duck Soup Inn is across the road, specializing in locally sourced seafood dishes. Back to the resort, a generous extended continental breakfast is available to everyone- of course, yours is served in the airy dining room, while the glampers shovel their waffles out in the woods.

3 Northwest Weekend Getaways for Families
Go Glamping: G is for glamour camping – glamping is like packing a five-star hotel room into a canvas tent. HipTravelMama was raving about this last summer and now this summer we are seeing this trend on many magazines including Seattle Met, Seattle Magazine and Sunset. There are numerous glamping sites around the country and the world. On the West coast, Lakedale in Friday Harbor has canvas cabins, retro airstream trailers to sleep under the stars in comfort. Prices start at $149 per night. Cave B Inn at SageCliffe on the Columbia gorge also has luxury yurts and cliff-side retreats among the vineyards. Give it a whirl!

The Island Hop – Ace of Lakes
Consider the spotty cell coverage a blessing at Lakedale, the island’s enclave of rustic elegance. Here, modern day log cabins are replete with indoor fireplaces, well-appointed furnishings and full kitchens. Bonus: The fridge is stocked with isle-churned ice cream and DIY sundae fixings! There is no restaurant on property, but seasonal meals can be delivered with cooking instructions. It can be viewed as a negative- or an excuse not to leave. Want to feign “roughing it”? Glamping season kicks off May 1 in the resort’s canvas cabins and two vintage Airstream trailers.

Reserve Now or Rough It This Summer: Swank New Digs on San Juan Island Allow for Close-in “Camping” – Call this camping? More like “glamping,” an amenity-laden option for bug- and dirt-averse nature lovers
Got your summer camping reservations yet? ‘Course you do; we Northwest die-hard dirt campers know you gotta get online in early February to snag the choice riverside sites. Or do we? Though I quiver with anticipation whenever I see my sleek Coleman stove gathering dust in my garage, a press release that just crossed my desktop has me wondering whether this is the summer I’ll consider a swankier, less bug-infested version of my fave outdoor activity. I give you Lakedale at Three Lakes, San Juan Island’s answer to the question, “How can I camp without a rain fly?” The resort has just announced a lovely retro option for “glamping”: a fully equipped 1978 Sovereign Airstream, complete with kitchenette (oven!), microwave, toilet, heat and air, and bed and bath linens. Linens? You had me at “oven!” You can book this baby beginning May 1 (lakedale.com; $199/night), or reserve a number of other canvas cabins on site (from $149/night).’Course, if you, like me, require tent stake-pounding to get your heart pounding, there are still lovely campsites available at Ohanapecosh this summer (recreation.gov; $15/night). But you’ll have to do without the microwave. And linens.

The 41 Places to Go in 2011
2. San Juan Islands, Wash.
Bold-face restaurateurs vie with unspoiled nature. Nature wins.
The big draw for the San Juan Islands this year just might be its dining scene. Blaine Wetzel, a former chef at the wildly acclaimed Copenhagen restaurant Noma, took the reins at Willows Inn on Lummi Island (due to reopen on Feb. 10), while Lisa Nakamura, who has trained with big-name chefs like Thomas Keller, opened Allium on Orcas Island. But the eternal lure of the San Juans – what brings chefs out as well as tourists – are the landscapes. On islands from Shaw to Decatur, pastoral hills give way to broody forests and scrappy escarpments that overlook fjordlike inlets. Thanks to an active land preservation effort by organizations like the San Juan County Land Bank, each year new areas are protected from logging or unruly development, and in turn provide fresh terrain for the public to explore. Last year, the San Juan Island National Historic Park grew by 312 acres with the purchase of densely forested Mitchell Hill. On Lopez Island, a 50-year lease signed by the state Department of Natural Resources in 2009 now protects the Lopez Hill area from logging; a web of public trails winds past mossy conifers and madrona trees with peeling cinnamon-red bark. And some smaller parcels have the air of a secret about them, like the spectacular Watmough Bay Preserve on Lopez, with a trail that leads to a strip of beach on a wooded inlet, its moody water as magically lighted as a Bierstadt painting.

Gourmet Glamping at Lakedale
Lakedale is offering glamorous canvas cabins and a tasty campfire menu during the weekend of Sept. 24. Chef Joseph Foriska from The Bluff Restaurant at Friday Harbor House created the menu. During the event, Foriska will serve as the cooking instructor for guests. “Gourmet Glamping” is a weekend where guests can bring their culinary interests outdoors, and along with teams of other glampers, individuals will learn, produce and enjoy their gourmet creations paired with wine for each course from San Juan Island Vineyards. From the smoke jidori chicken to the “s’mores symposium” that will feature mint chocolate chip cookies and caramel, guests will experience fireside cooking like never before, and the sleep under the stars in a custom-built 225-square-foot canvas cabin with a queen-sized bed. Details:”Gourment Glamping” is Sept. 24-25 with rates starting at $349 for double occupancy. Reservations must be made at least two weeks in advance.

“Back to the Wild”
San Juan Island, WA – Deal, A quick calming country drive from the bustle of San Juan Island’s ferry landing, Lakedale sits on 82 forested acres with 3 freshwater lakes. It’s always had campsites, cabins and a lodge and now it’s added a cluster of 13 canvas tents decked out with pillow-top bedding, lanterns, even bath products to cart to the bathhouse.
Chicago Tribune, July 17,2010
See your San Juan Island whale for free: It’s a pricey trip, but there are ways to cut corners to save big on a journey to San Juan Island, Wash.
Save a little: if that resort is too expensive and camping sounds too rustic, Lakedale on the north end of the island offers the ultimate compromise: glamping. Its glamourous camping is a “canvas cabin” furnished with a bed, table and chairs for $149 per night. Some small inns such as Juniper Lane Guest House (rooms starting at $85 per night) offer even less expensive indoor amenities. Save a lot: There’s no cheaper way to stay on the island than camping at one of the two campground, San Juan Country Park or Lakedale.
The Seattle Times/ NW Weekend, July 14,2010
Glamour + camping = glamping. (Does it add up for you?)
If a stay in one of the 13 cushy canvas cabins at Lakedale at Three Lakes (between Friday Harbor and Roche Harbor) on San Juan Island isn’t enough pampering, you can buy “Glamping Survival Kits” at their General Store. The kits’ contents are reflected in their names: “Happy Hour” and “Rekindle.” The 225-square-foot canvas cabins are furnished with a queen bed, full-size sleeper sofa or lounge chairs, hickory dining set, bed and bath linens. A cordless lantern comes in handy for reaching the bathhouse with shared flush toilets and showers just a short walk away. Glampsites have Adirondack chairs, a picnic table, and a fire ring. Glamping rates start at $149 per night. For fans of the retro, there are also two 1970s-vintage Airstream trailers available for rent at $229 per night. The glamping season ends Sept. 30.
Seattle Magazine, July 2010
Best Camping Spots: Not so Roughing It
Another alluring option is Lakedale ($149-$279/night; lakedale.com), which, besides offering more than 80 sites for tents campers, rents out 13 wood-floored “canvas cabins,” with sleeper sofas and front porches bedecked with Adirondack chairs, picnic tables and fire rings perfect for toasting marshmallows. Couples will especially enjoy Lakedale’s standard canvas cabins, and families or groups can share a larger, 450-square-foot version with two queen-size beds and a sleeper soda. While Lakedale’s glampsites do not have electricity or running water, shared showers/bath facilities are a quick walk away. And retro glampers rejoice: Lakedale also offers up two vintage Airstream trailers tucked between pine boughs lakeside with a private deck for your use and a free harmonica for you to take home.
Washington Magazine, Summer 2010
“Roughing It Like a Rock Star at Lakedale”
Even if your idea of “roughing it” means going without your double decaf latte and web-enabled cell , there’s no reason you can’t still enjoy spending time in the great outdoors. Lakedale at Three Lakes on Washington’s San Juan Islands offers guests the chance to camp out in style in a pair of full restored vintage Airstream trailers. The Airstream, considered to be the “Rolls Royce” of the travel, trailers, is one of the five accommodation types offered at Lakedale. Additional lodging options include cozy guestrooms, family friendly log cabins, canvas cabins with real beds and linens and campsites.
Instantly, identifiable by their long, rounded shape (imagine a giant silver Twinkie), Airstream trailers are experiencing a revival and have become increasingly popular among celebrity owners such as Sean Penn, Sheryl Crow, Tom Hanks, and Francis Ford Coppola. A stylish, modernistic take on old-fashioned luxury, there’s even an Airstream on display in The Museum of Modern Art in New York. Located on Premiere waterfront campsites at Lakedale, the 1979 Airstream Excella and 1978 Sovereign Airstream come complete with outdoor furnishings and a private deck, each of the fully equipped Airstreams includes a kitchenette with a four-burner stove and oven, a refrigerator, a microwave oven, a dinette table, ample closets, bath facilities, heat and air conditioning. Posh amenities include Cuisinart cookware, coffee maker, bed and bath linens, and Molton Brown bath products. Lakedale’s “Airstream Adventure” package includes: A two-night stay in a vintage Airstream for four guests, a breakfast basket complete with muffin mix, pancake mix, homemade granola, milk and OJ, choice of a whale watch excursion or three hour kayak tour to warm up for your high seas adventure on one of the resort’s three fresh springwater lakes.
Spokane Coeur d’Alene Living, June 2010
“Worth It”
Elegant Canvas tent camping without any of the set-up or teardown at the Lakedale and a dinner at either the Backdoor Kitchen or the Duck Soup Inn. Try your hand at “glamping” at the Lakedale or arrange to spend a night in the on-site retro Airstream trailer. Lakedale started as a glorified campground tucked in between three small lakes in the middle of San Juan Islands. Plenty of guests still come for the great traditional campsites on the property, but over the years the owners have added family-friendly log cabins and an upscale central lodge with well-appointed hotel rooms. The latest additions are even more memorable: spacious canvas tents set on platforms and furnished much like rustic hotel room with queen beds, couch futons, dressers and a small camp table and lantern. Bring your own cooler and fire-cook outside or eat out (the Duck Soup Inn is less than two minutes away). Either way, Lakedale’s tents offer the best of camping without the hassles.

Travel Tips: Resorts for Families Near Seattle
You’ll need to take a ferry to reach this resort, which is located on San Juan Island, the largest of a six-island archipelago off the northwestern coast of Washington. Nestled on a wooded tract of 82 acres, it’s a perfect getaway for families who love the outdoors. Lakedale offers three types of accommodations: rooms in its central lodge, log cabins, and canvas cabins (upscale tents). The latter two are ideal for families, and the ultimate choice depends on just how willing everybody is to rough it. The resort’s six log cabins have two bedrooms each, as well as a fireplace, full kitchen, cable TV, DVD player and large deck. A couple of the resort’s canvas cabins are large enough to accommodate small families. In terms of activities, families have a wide array of the property’s natural features they can explore. There are three freshwater lakes in which swimming is allowed, as well as nature trails, horseshoe pits, boat rentals, picnicking and barbecuing, and fishing in one of the resort’s stocked fishing ponds.

If you like nature but aren’t necessarily willing to hoof it into the backcountry, Lakedale might be right for you. The 82-acre private retreat between Friday Harbor and Roche Harbor on San Juan Island is situated on three serene freshwater lakes. A smart and stylish 10-room central lodge (which can be rented for weddings and business retreats), six log cabins (each with two beds/baths, a gas fireplace and a full kitchen) and a similarly appointed three bed/bath lake house for bigger groups comprise the traditional lodging options at Lakedale. Those willing to do without some of the comforts of home can “glamp” (glamour camp) in one of Lakedale’s 13 lakeside canvas cabins – charming, 225-square-foot platform tents each with a queen bed (with bed and bath linens), a table and chairs, and a deck-top fire pit perfect for roasting marshmallows to the sounds of loon calls. Or take your own tent and pitch it along the lake at one of more than 80 campsites. A general store (with WiFi) and shower/bathroom facilities help campers tend their worldly needs so they can focus on staring into the starry heavens all night long. Gourmet “Glamping” in Washington
The term “glamping” is almost as annoying to me as “staycation” — actually, possibly more so — but the concept is one I can really get behind: all the pleasures of the great outdoors without sacrificing comfort or style. Last week, The New York Times brought news of combo adventure travel-gourmet cooking excursions (which you already knew about since I wrote about it last year), but here’s one better: learn to cook gourmet campfire cuisine, while sleeping outdoors in style in Washington’s San Juan Islands. Head to Lakedale on May 14-15 or September 24-25, 2010, where you’ll check into a 225 square foot canvas cabin, which will be outfitted with s a queen bed with pillow-top bedding, a full-size sleeper sofa or two lounge chairs, pillows and a flannel duvet, a table and four chairs, one cordless lantern and bath linens. (Try to overlook that it’s called a “glampsite”.) Then, you’ll gather around the fire for a cooking seminar with Chef Joseph Foriska of The Bluff Restaurant?Bar?Terrace at Friday Harbor House to learn to prepare such dishes as apple cider marinated chicken breast, corn skewers finished with a poblano compound butter, campfire baked beans and more. It ends with a “s’mores symposium”, which promises to take this kid-favorite treat to a whole new level.

425 Magazine, March-April 2010
Lakedale at Three Lakes was prominently featured in 425 Magazine’s cover article, “Camping – Roughing It = Glamping, And More Unique Experiences on San Juan Island”, which introduced many readers to the phenomenon of “glamping”, or experiencing the convenience of a hotel room without losing the feeling of being outdoors. As Lakedale’s General Manager, Scott Hale, was quoted as saying, “How many times have you been rolling around on an air mattress, wishing you had a bed?”, when referring to the difference between pitch-it-yourself campsites and the plush conditions found inside the 13 spacious canvas cabins on Lakedale’s 82 acres. Hale describes the large canvas cabins with queen-sized pillow-top beds with cozy linens, furniture and a wooden platform floor best, “Glamping is what everyone wants camping to be, and has never been until now – It’s simple. It’s connecting with nature without all the hassle. Everything is done for you.” In addition to the canvas cabin, the article highlights various other accommodations available at Lakedale, including traditional camping, log cabins, a three-bedroom lake house, 10 guestroom lodge, RV sites, and a 1978 Airstream trailer available for rent. A picture of one of Lakedale’s canvas cabins also served as the front cover image of the issue.

The camping trip survival kits offered by Lakedale (www.lakedale.com) at Three Lakes, in Washington, have little to do with emergencies: The Happy Hour kit includes folding glasses, a wine opener, a bottle of Happy Camper wine, and a six-pack of beer. Rekindle comes with firewood, fixings for gourmet s’mores, sparkling wine, and collapsible flutes. Guests may enjoy such rations within Lakedale’s newest lodgings: canvas cabins atop wooden platforms, bearing queen-size beds and a “front porch” with Adirondack chairs. About mid-island is Lakedale at Three Lakes. Campsites, upscale canvas cabins, and a 1978 31-foot silver Airstream, complete with lava lamp and safari print fabric, are closed for the winter, but the log cabins, lodge and Lake House are open. We stayed in a well-furnished log cabin with a full kitchen (sans dishwasher), comfy chairs, fireplace, loft and a peaceful ambience. In the lodge, every room but one overlooks the lake.

The Lakedale at Three Lakes on the north side of the island is unexpectedly fantastic. The instant Ken and I pulled off Roche Harbor Road and onto the drive-in-the-woods, I was sold on the place. I even made the comment, “Wow, I think I can actually hear pine needles dropping.” Silence. Beautiful, colorful, autumn scented silence.
