And while we can’t predict an exact timeframe for these improvements, the push to restore pre-pandemic service levels is in motion, and we’re excited for smoother, more reliable travel around the Pacific Northwest.

Investing in Washington State’s Ferries
State legislators have approved more than $1.8 billion in funding for ferry system improvements across the region—covering everything from modernizing ticketing systems to upgrading the vessels themselves. In short, the governor’s ferry improvements plan calls for:
- Restoring full service on key ferry routes,
- Recruiting and training new ferry workers, and
- Modernizing aging vessels
Also in the mix: plans to convert some of the fleet’s largest ferries to hybrid-electric. That part is currently on pause due to the complexity of retrofitting existing ship hulls with new technology. What’s not paused, however, is that state lawmakers appear committed to reducing pollution, protecting our waterways, and striving toward a cleaner, more efficient future. We call that a win for San Juan Island nature lovers and ferry riders alike!
Ferrying to the San Juan Islands
Washington’s ferry system connects a variety of communities via routes across Puget Sound and the Salish Sea. Bremerton and Bainbridge Island are popular stops—but riding a ferry is also one of the easiest (and most scenic!) ways to reach the San Juan Islands. - Dogs in pet carriers are allowed in the interior passenger areas of state ferries.
- Dogs too big for pet carriers must be leashed and are not allowed to remain inside for the duration of the voyage.
- Service animals are welcome in all passenger areas of the ferries and terminals.
