Where To Bike on San Juan Island

San Juan Island offers a little over 50 miles of paved roads. Its diverse terrain allows you to tailor your ride to your preferences. Cruise along the coastline on flat, seaside paths, soaking in the breathtaking vistas of the Olympic Mountains and the Canadian Gulf Islands. Venture inland and tackle rolling hills that meander through pastoral farmlands. For the thrill-seekers, there are also challenging climbs offering panoramic rewards.

San Juan Island’s Must-Ride Routes

  • Dave’s Loop: This infamous 25-mile loop, named after Dave Pass, is a gorgeous ride through the middle of the island. This loop is for you if you’re similar to Dave, who found a way to get from the top to the bottom of San Juan Island while staying clear of many of the island’s big hills. Follow Roche Harbor Road north and make a left onto Egg Lake Road. At each intersection of the ride, you have the option to turn back into town on either Beaverton Valley Road or San Juan Valley Road or continue on the ride. You’ll pass lakes and farms and get a real sense of the island’s interior beauty.
  • Friday Harbor to American Camp National Park: After fueling up on breakfast (Bakery San Juan would be a perfect starting pointand our breakfast blog has even more ideas), take Mullis Road out of town, which turns into Cattle Point Road. Enjoy gently rolling hills and picturesque farms as you cruise to American Camp National Park. After you pass the visitor center on your right, you’ll see Haro Strait. Here, you can pull off to the right, where you can park your bike and take in the panoramic views while reading the historical signage. Visit Cattle Point Light House or enjoy a hike along the Bluff Trail or to Mt. Finlayson before heading back.
  • Friday Harbor to Roche Harbor: In this 19-mile loop, you’ll gently cruise uphill along Roche Harbor Road and pass by San Juan Vineyards on the right (and, soon after, Lakedale on your left). As you ride by Roche Harbor Airport, at about the 8-mile point, turn left and enjoy a short detour at the San Juan Island Sculpture Park. Then continue on Roche Harbor Road bearing right down to Roche Harbor Marina. Take a short ride to the John S. McMillin Memorial Mausoleum before heading back to town.
  • Pear Point Turn Point: A perfect six-mile family ride, this route has you heading right onto Harrison Street in Friday Harbor and turning onto Turn Point Road. Circle around the peninsula past Albert Jensen & Son Shipyard and Jackson’s Beach County Park. Take in the scent of the cedar forests as you ride by. At Jackson Beach, enjoy views across Griffin Bay to Dinner Island. Then turn right onto Argyle Avenue to head back into town.
  • The San Juan Island Loop: This classic 43-mile route circumnavigates the island, showcasing its diverse landscapes—a must-do if you’re looking to cycle San Juan. This loop is a great ride with a mix of hills and flats. Depart town in either direction for a nice warm-up. Once out of Friday Harbor, the ride follows rolling hills out to the west coast of San Juan Island. The scenic West Side Road offers everything from open views across the Haro Strait to dense forest. This loop is a perfect choice for the avid cyclist or biking groups that want to explore more of the island. Plan for a full day to truly savor the scenery and stop for lunch or a refreshing beverage along the way.
