  • Trail length: 4.7 miles (loop)
  • Elevation gain: 508 feet

We’re kicking things off with a bang and this quintessential hiking trail on San Juan Island. Considered moderately challenging, this route rewards your effort with serene, stunning views from start to finish.

Located south of Friday Harbor and not too far from Lakedale (only about a 20-minute drive), Jakles Lagoon Trail is a go-to for birdwatching or a peaceful solo hike. (Don’t miss the open meadows and awe-inspiring views in the second half—you’ll thank us later!)

Cady Mountain Trail and Cady Viewpoint Loop

  • Distance from Lakedale: 2 miles
  • Trail length: 4.5 miles (loop)
  • Elevation gain: 820 feet

This under-the-radar trail leans more challenging—best suited toward experienced hikers thanks to its elevation gain and uneven terrain. But the payoff? A peaceful, biodiverse slice of the island that feels worlds away. The Douglas-fir woodland alone is worth the climb.

Bikes and horses are welcome on the Cady Mountain Trail and Cady Viewpoint Loop, as are leashed, well-behaved pups. Just a heads-up, though: While this spot is close to Lakedale, parking is limited.

Mount Finlayson Trail

  • Trail length: 4.0 miles (loop)
  • Elevation gain: 465 feet

Mount Finlayson is one of San Juan Island’s most popular hikes—and it’s easy to see why. This scenic loop winds through open grasslands, past lagoons, and along coastal bluffs, offering dramatic views of the Olympic Mountains and Mount Baker. The four-mile trail is easily accessible by car and friendly to hikers of all experience levels.
