Fall means savoring the San Juan Islands! Every autumn (from late September through early November) the San Juan Islands celebrate the bounty that is fall. Harvest dinners, wine tastings, farmer’s markets, farm tours and film festivals are just some of the fantastic happenings on the island this time of year… a feast for the senses and a great time to visit with no crowds!
Let’s start with the farmers…every Saturday morning, the Brickworks in Friday Harbor (just 2 blocks from the ferry) hosts its weekly Farmer’s Market from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Farmers (some arriving on boats from the outer islands) come laden with seasonal fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers. Local purveyors bring baked goods, jams and jellies, seafood, locally grown meats, and crafts to share with locals and visitors alike. Our favorites are the amazing flower bouquets from grower Susie Wampler and sweet treats from Café Demeter! (The market operates twice a month in November and December, and on the first Saturday of the month in January, February, and March.)
Local businesses are also in the swing of savoring!
- Restaurants: Great dining specials from some of our favorite eateries…a perfect time to try Friday Harbor House, Coho, Cynthia’s, and Black Fish Bistro.
- Outdoor adventures: Take a sea kayaking tour and be amazed at our local wildlife, or charter a private fishing boat.
- Cultural Events: Visit the incredible new San Juan Island Art Museum, the Whale Museum or take a Master Gardening class!
The San Juan Islands also produce great wine! San Juan Vineyards, our local winery, celebrates its Annual Harvest Festival in the fall. You can pick grapes as a volunteer or paid worker, and lunch is included. The Vineyard Tasting Room offers special deals throughout the month of October. Call 360.378.9463 or check out their website to sign up.
For film buffs and nature lovers, the Friday Harbor Film Festival, held in early November, is a popular event that features three full days of quality documentaries and docu-dramas, highlighting compelling stories about humanitarian efforts, environmental issues, social concerns and daring explorations.
Each film is followed by lively discussion with the filmmaker or a local expert. Check our their website for more info.
Please call us with any questions you may have…we’d love to have you enjoy the fall as much as we do!
