Summer Events on San Juan Island 2017

May 17, 2017

San Juan Island has more than its share of gorgeous natural attractions, which is one reason our guests love to visit.

Starting from the ferry ride across the Salish Sea, to the drive through the island to arrive at Lakedale with peaks of Mt. Baker and glimpses of pastoral farmland and forests along the way, it’s easy to lose yourself in the island’s beauty. But we’ll fill you in on a local secret…there are some great events that happen all summer long that you may just have to add into your romantic vacation, weekend getaway, or family adventure!

Here are some of our favorite special events happening on San Juan Island this summer:

26th Annual San Juan Island Artists’ Studio Tour

June 3 – June 4

Every year, the artists of the San Juans throw open their studio doors to visitors and locals alike.San Juan Island Artist

Painters, sculptors, ceramic artists, printmakers, woodworkers, and fiber artists explain their creative processes, from raw material to finished product, in the studio setting…a rare treat!

Armed with a map of the studio locations, you’ll explore many of the island’s rural lanes and roads that you’d never otherwise get to see- all while learning about the island’s local art (and maybe taking a piece or two home with you!)

Three Lakes Triathlon and Marathon

June 17 – June 18

Three Lakes Triathlon & MarathonOne of our favorite events of the summer is the Three Lakes Triathlon and Marathon, which is hosted at Lakedale!

The Triathlon occurs on Saturday, with several options offered for all fitness levels and abilities. Think swimming in our warm lakes, biking through the verdant June countryside, and running through wooded trails alongside the shore.

We’ll celebrate your successful finish with live music and a food truck feast!

For all of you runners, Sunday brings a marathon, half-marathon, and 10k race. The races include incredibly scenic routes through forests, lavender fields, and shoreline vistas.

Kinda makes you want to take up running!

Friday Harbor Fourth of July

July 4San Juan Island Fireworks

Close your eyes and imagine the perfect small-town Fourth of July celebration…we think Friday Harbor’s is it! The entire town gathers on Spring Street at 10:30 a.m. for the parade…local businesses, community groups, (and whoever wants to join in, including dogs) cheer and throw candy to happy kids.

After the parade, the Kiwanis Club hosts the annual Pig War Picnic at the San Juan Historical Museum grounds (great BBQ!) with live music. Roche Harbor Resort, at the north end of the island, offers an Old Fashioned 4th of July with a doughnut-eating contest, blindfolded dinghy races, and log rolling contests.

There’s nothing better than watching fireworks over the water!

Grab your kids, your honey, your blanket and be ready to relax at the end of the day with magical fireworks reflecting over the port of Friday Harbor (and also at Roche Harbor). And if you haven’t had enough fun, head to the “Rock the Docks” dance party at the marina at the end of the night!

San Juan Island Lavender Festival

July 15 – July 16

The lavender fields of San Juan Island are one of the island’s most beautiful attractions—and certainly the best smelling!

Pelindaba Lavender Farm sprawls across 25 acres of land. Stroll through the purple-flowered fields, enjoy lavender-based snacks and lemonade on the lawn, and shop handcrafted lavender products. You can harvest your own bouquet straight from the field, weave a wreath, or watch live lavender-inspired demonstrations. And if you miss the festival, don’t worry—the fields are open all summer. Pelindaba also has a store in town if you can’t make it to the farm!

Whatever you do, don’t forget your camera!

National Historical Park Encampment

July 28 – July 30

San Juan Island ReenactmentMany historical reenactment groups recreate famous battles but here on San Juan Island, we reenact peace!

This summer will be the 18th reenactment of the joint occupation of San Juan Island by British and American forces from 1859-1872, when a war almost erupted over the death of a pig. The participants live like pioneers, demonstrating blacksmithing, weaving, and black powder muskets.

The annual Candlelight Ball will be held on Saturday night in the English Camp barracks, where you can party like it’s 1859!
