Discover the Magic of San Juan Island Art

On the other side of Lakedale, a short drive northwest along Roche Harbor Road, the San Juan Islands Sculpture Park delivers a different kind of gallery experience where art and nature share the spotlight. Home to more than 110 unique creations by both emerging and world-renowned sculptors, it’s a place where you might be admiring a bronze statue one moment and an eagle soaring overhead the next. Not a bad combination, if you ask us.
Perfect for picnics with the whole family (yes, that includes you, Fido!), admission to the San Juan Islands Sculpture Park is free, although donations are appreciated to preserve this special place for generations to come.

San Juan Island Art Classes
Feeling inspired to get hands-on during your visit? You’re definitely not alone. SJIMA, Alchemy Art Center, and local studios regularly offer San Juan Island art classes and workshops for all ages, covering everything from painting and printmaking to mixed media and photography.
Fair warning: You may head home with paint on your hands (and a new favorite hobby).

If your visit happens to line up with a San Juan Island art walk, consider yourself lucky. First Friday Art Walks—held, you guessed it, on the first Friday of each month—transform Friday Harbor into a strolling gallery, complete with pop-up exhibits, extended shopping hours, and a distinctly festive vibe.
For something a little different, and if you’re visiting SJI in the early summer, don’t miss one of the biggest highlights of the year: the San Juan Islands Artists’ Studio Tour. Since 1991, this self-guided, San Juan Island art tour has welcomed visitors into working studios across the island, providing a rare, behind-the-scenes glimpse into how art comes to life. While the quality of work is always impressive, what truly sets the San Juan Island art scene apart is the accessibility of the artists themselves.

Speaking of the Artists…
It’s no secret that many who live and work on San Juan Island draw inspiration from their surroundings. From photographers capturing dramatic skies or quiet moments to painters, ceramicists, and sculptors who combine color palettes that reflect both land and sea, the influence of this place we’re so lucky to call home shows up sometimes subtly, sometimes boldly, but always thoughtfully.

Many of these folks are also members of the San Juan Islands Makers Guild, a community of artists, artisans, musicians, performers, designers, and more. With representation from all kinds of mediums, the group exists, in part, to celebrate the creativity and ingenuity of the many talented artists who call San Juan, Orcas, and Lopez islands home. While you’re here, be sure to check out events hosted by the guild. (You’ll be glad you did!)
SJI Art-Adjacent Must-See: The McMillin Mausoleum
Some might argue that the John S. McMillin Mausoleum isn’t technically art, but we disagree. That’s because the final resting place of Roche Harbor founder John McMillin and his family is one of the most incredible examples of craftsmanship you’ll find on San Juan Island.
As we’ve shared before, this massive structure combines neoclassical design with Masonic symbolism. Featuring an open-air rotunda, limestone construction, and broken Roman columns (representing unfinished business in life), the McMillin Mausoleum is a fascinating piece of island history—and well worth a spot on your itinerary.
