First Things First: Getting to Roche Harbor
Take it from us: Arriving in Roche Harbor by seaplane is a thrilling way to kick off your island getaway. As you soar over the sparkling bay, you’ll get your first taste of the village’s charm, greeted by stunning views and friendly faces. Kenmore Air offers direct flights from Seattle and many surrounding areas, making the journey a breeze.
But if you’re already on the island, Roche Harbor is just a quick drive from Lakedale. Simply head northwest on Roche Harbor Road, which also connects us to Friday Harbor to the southeast.
1 — Treat Your Tastebuds to Coffee and Donuts
Enjoy a caffeinated kickstart to your day, courtesy of coffee from Lime Kiln Café. Whether you’re keen to grab one of their world-famous donuts or require the fuel of a heartier breakfast, this classic American eatery has you covered.
For a more seasonal experience, and if you’re visiting Roche Harbor between May and September, Beechtree Espresso is an outdoor stand serving up coffee, pastries, and ice cream. (Who says ice cream can’t be breakfast food? Certainly not us!)
2 — Explore Roche Harbor History
Roche Harbor has some fascinating stories to tell—from its First Nations roots to its role in British and U.S. military history, and even its (nearly) century-long legacy of limestone production. At its peak, Roche Harbor produced almost 300,000 barrels of lime each year, and visitors to the area can still see remnants of this industry today, with the old lime kilns located near the Hotel de Haro.
Pro tip: Stop by the hotel’s front desk to grab a history brochure and walking map. It’s the perfect way to explore the island’s storied past at your own pace.
3 — Head Out for a Hike
Boasting more than 10 miles of trails, Roche Harbor is a haven for hikers of all ages and abilities. You’ll wander through lush forests, wetlands, and recreational areas—and you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the Salish Sea along the way.
Heading northwest on the Roche Harbor Road Trail brings you to another can’t-miss destination: San Juan Islands Sculpture Park. Open all year long, this fido-friendly, 20-acre park features more than 150 sculptures by artists from the PNW and beyond, plus interactive exhibits for both kids and adults.
Trek just a bit farther and you’ll find the John S. McMillin Mausoleum (psst, it’s so cool we wrote a whole blog about it), the final resting place of Roche Harbor founder John McMillin and his family. Nestled among towering fir trees, this memorial adds a peaceful, hauntingly beautiful moment to your visit.
4 — Meet for Lunch at Madrona Bar & Grill
Fresh seafood, waterfront views, good vibes: You’ll enjoy all three when you break bread at Madrona Bar & Grill. Open seasonally from May through September, Madrona Bar & Grill is a prime spot for hungry guests to rest, refuel, and recharge—all while surrounded by SJI’s trademark beauty.
5 — Indulge in Roche Harbor Retail Therapy

Wind (or wine) down your day with surf and turf at McMillin’s Dining Room. Reserve a spot in the fireside lounge as you sip on signature cocktails and nosh on small plates, or opt for a more formal experience (not to mention *chef’s kiss* harbor views) in the dining room.
Head’s up: While McMillin’s is open year-round, the restaurant is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
8 — Honor Traditions at the Colors Ceremony
The colors ceremony has been a beloved Roche Harbor sunset tradition for nearly 70 years—and if you’re visiting between May and September, it’s a must-see!
Here’s what you can expect: 10 minutes before sunset, dock staff lower the flags of Roche Harbor, Washington State, Great Britain, and Canada. A cannon sounds, prompting staff to lower the U.S. flag. While it may seem a bit old-fashioned, that’s exactly what makes it so special. This timeless tradition reflects the unique Roche Harbor community, and it’s a beautiful way to honor the area’s rich history and spirit.
