The Highlands

These three short hikes will show you the northern end of San Juan Island you would never expect! A quick and smooth half mile hike will get you to the Mausoleum. Find out where it is and why it’s there.

Now that you’ve warmed up, we’ll explore the quarries and get a real neat perspective of a once vibrant industry. Admire the jaw dropping 200’ rock faces and then climb to the top! No worries, we’ll take the easy way. Well, it is easier than traversing the rock face but does have some pretty steep sections! Once we’ve made our way out of the rocks, you’ll be rewarded with a spectacular view of Roche Harbor.

Our final conquest will be Young Hill – the highest point on San Juan Island. Why do they call it Young Hill? Join us and find out! This hike is strenuous at times as we will gain 650 vertical feet very quickly, but the reward is an inspiring view of our island paradise!

All said you will have conquered just about 2 ½ miles and over 900 feet in elevation in about three hours! Most all paths in this adventure are wooded and well marked – unless you choose to traverse the face of Young Hill. Go ahead, have three scoops and extra sprinkles on that sundae!
